Gauteng Premier David Makhura has commended the police for their swift arrest of three suspects in connection with the brutal murder of Mozambican national Emmanuel Sithole in Alexander. Since the outbreak of the xenophobic violence, 154 people have been arrested in the province.
“We encourage the police and other law enforcement agencies to continue working round the clock to protect both foreign nationals and citizens and to arrest those breaking the law,” said Premier Makhura.
Premier Makhura also expressed appreciation for all the anti-xenophobia campaigns and positive messages from society, community leaders, faith based organisations and the media, condemning these inhumane acts. “The attacks violate all the values that our country embodies, especially the respect for human life, human rights, human dignity and Ubuntu,” adds Makhura.
This week the provincial government will embark on a series of engagements with various community leaders including the hostel dwellers leadership. Government also support efforts by various groups aimed at mobilising South Africans to reject xenophobia in all its manifestations. On Thursday, 23 April 2015, the provincial government will join a march organized by Peoples Coalition Against Xenophobia and Friends Assembles at 1pm at Peter Roos Park on Empire Road on Constitution Hill.
