Premier David Makhura extends warm greetings and best wishes to all who celebrate Diwali

On this auspicious occasion of Diwali, I extend warm greetings and best wishes to all those who celebrate Diwali.

Deepa-vali or Diwali means a "row of lights".  This sacred festival of Diwali has been an integral part of the ancient Indian civilisation and the Hindu religion. Today, this festival is celebrated with great excitement across the world.

On this auspicious day, it is customary for every home to be decorated with brightly lit lamps while the skies are lit up with fireworks and special treats are prepared.

However, Diwali is not just about the celebration - there is a much deeper significance to it. Diwali is the celebration of Lord Rama's victory over evil.  It spiritually signifies the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, hope over despair.

As we light our homes with diyas (lamps), we need to recognise the inner light that is present in all of us. It must show us the path of righteousness even at the darkest of the times. It must brighten all aspects of life, driving away darkness, and usher in the light of knowledge and divinity.  It must introduce us to peace, compassion and love for all things.

May this Festival of Lights dispel the darkness of ignorance and bring light of happiness for those who are less privileged.

On behalf of the Gauteng Government (or the people of Gauteng), I wish the Festival of Lights, light up your life, with peace, happiness, love, good health and prosperity.

Happy Diwali.
