Premier David Makhura on Denver train accident

The Gauteng Provincial Government has extended condolences to the family of a train guard who died during a collision that involved two trains at Denver Station, Johannesburg, on Tuesday morning.

Premier David Makhura also wished those who were injured a speedy recovery.

According to information released by Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa), 239 commuters and one train driver have been reportedly injured. Among those who are injured, two commuters are reported to be critical, 25 suffered serious injuries, and 213 commuters suffered minor injuries. Eighty of the injured have already been released from hospital.

“We learnt with great shock of this gruesome accident that occurred this morning. The safety of commuters in our public transport infrastructure remains government’s top priority,” said Makhura.

Makhura has promised that government would work with all parties involved to ensure that the cause of this accident is investigated and concluded speedily to prevent such accidents.
