Post Office issues subsidised TV decoders in Limpopo and Mpumalanga

SA Post Office making headway with issuing subsidised TV decoders in Limpopo, Mpumalanga

Post Office branches in Limpopo and Mpumalanga are making good progress with issuing subsidised television decoders that are installed at local households that qualified for a subsidised decoder.

It is expected that the analogue television broadcast signals will be switched off by 1 April 2022.  The goal is to install decoders at all the households that applied before 31 October 2021.

Once the analogue signal has been switched off, a decoder will be required for most television sets.  Viewers who already use a decoder will not be affected.

The Post Office stresses that it is not too late to apply for a subsidised decoder.  The following households qualify for a subsidised set-top box:

  • The applicant must have a South African identity document
  • The applicant must own a functional TV set
  • The household income must be R3 500 or less per month. Recipients of a social grant also qualify for a decoder.

The household member who applies will have to bring:

  • An identity document;
  • Proof of address (municipal account, bank statement, or letter from local traditional authority);

Proof of income in the form of a bank statement or affidavit.  All Sassa beneficiaries also qualify for a subsidised set-top box.

Households in Limpopo and Mpumalanga that successfully applied will soon receive an SMS to inform them that an installer will contact them to make arrangements for installing their decoder kit.

The switch to digital television broadcasts bring better picture quality and more channels for viewers. The decoder also gives access to all SABC radio stations.
