The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises, Ms Vytjie Mentor, says her call for support to relief efforts in Haiti has received an overwhelming response from various organisations and South Africans.
Ms Mentor says she has been inundated with telephone calls from religious bodies, non-governmental organisations, companies and people within the medical field, all of whom have pledged their support to relief efforts for Haiti. These have also promised assistance to any mission that goes to Haiti.
Haiti was struck on Tuesday by an earthquake which left 100 000 people dead. The disaster hit the country’s capital Port-au-Prince.
“About 15 doctors and five nurses will form part of the rescue mission that will go to Haiti. More volunteers are needed, especially those that are fluent in French, Spanish and Creole,” says Ms Mentor.
“A website will be set up to communicate all the information regarding the aid mission to Haiti.”
