Portfolio Committee on Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries calls for urgent intervention in De Doorns farm protest

The Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries calls for an urgent intervention to find a lasting solution to the protest violence in De Doorns, Western Cape.

The committee is pleading with all relevant stakeholders to come together and resolve the current wage disputes before the situation gets out of hand and possibly escalate to other areas.

“Much as we understand the plight of farm workers and their living conditions, we equally condemn any form of violence, intimidation and malicious damage to property in the strongest term during the wage negotiations.

We thus urge all parties involved, including the representative from farm workers and farmers to go back to negotiation table and negotiate in good faith in order to reach an amicable solution in the name of peace and stability”, said committee chairperson, Mr Lulu Johnson.

The Committee will continue to closely monitor the situation towards finding a lasting solution to the current impasse.
