Policeman arrested for speeding on N4

A policeman was arrested for clocking 151 km/h on a 100km/h speeding zone on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway between Zeerust and Swartruggens in the North West Province on Friday morning.

The alleged offence occurred at Groot Marico near Rietvalley at around 11h35. The 37 year old detective based at the Mmabatho Police Station was allegedly driving a Ford Focus to Rustenburg when he was pulled over by traffic officers from the North West Road Traffic Management unit.

He was locked up at the Groot Marico Police Station and is expected to appear in court on Tuesday to answer to charges of speeding, reckless and or negligent driving as he purportedly overtook on a barrier line forcing oncoming traffic off the road.

In commenting the officer who effected the arrest for putting the safety of road users above buddy-buddy relations, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono expressed a concern that among the over 2600 motorists arrested for speeding in recent months are people who are supposed to be role models.

Mohono has vowed that zero tolerance speed enforcement operations which has seen the province reduce road fatalities by 21,9 instead of the 4% that was targeted for the festive season would be sustained across all roads in the province as part of the National Rolling Enforcement Plan and the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety Campaign.
