Police trainee collapses at SAPS Tshwane Training Academy

On Tuesday, 31 January 2012 at approximately 16h00 a new recruit who had just arrived at the SAPS Tshwane Training Academy from KwaZulu-Natal, collapsed and died.

The recruit had been part of thousands from all over the country that had arrived yesterday to begin with their training to become police officials at the SAPS Tshwane Training Academy, in Pretoria West.  All the recruits were dropped off at the academy’s rugby field and from there had to jog to the parade grounds where the registration process was taking place.

On the way from the rugby field to the parade grounds the new recruit collapsed. Medics from the training academy immediately commenced with first aid whilst they waited for paramedics from Netcare 911. Paramedics declared him dead shortly after 17h00.

The new recruit was 37 years old and would have celebrated his 38th birthday tomorrow, 2 February. He was not married  and his immediate family have been notified of his death. An inquest docket has been opened and a post mortem is expected to establish the cause of his death.

The Management of the South African Police Service would like to express their deepest condolences to the family of Emmanuel Mvana Ndlela. He had worked as a reservist before applying and becoming accepted as a new recruit in the SAPS.
