Police top management condemns attack on police officers

The news of the attack of two police officers in Port Elizabeth today, 2 April was received with absolute shock and anger by the SAPS management.

Two constables, Mongezi Mqina (36) and Thandiswa Bambiso (33) were patrolling Sakuba Street at 4h15 in Veeplaas when they came under fire. It is not clear at this stage exactly what transpired but the shooting resulted in Thandiswa being killed and Mongezi being critically wounded. Mongezi was taken to a local hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

Another wounded man who is believed to be a suspect is in a local hospital under police guard.

The continuous attacks on our police officers certainly cannot be disregarded. “Communities need to stand resolutely opposed to such criminality”, said the Acting National Commissioner of police Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkwananzi. “Our police men and women in blue will remain undeterred in our quest to ensure safety and security”, added General Mkwanazi.

General Mkhwanazi has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the loved ones and close colleagues of Constable Thandiswa Bambiso and has wished Constable Mongezi Mqina a speedy recovery.
