Successes Operation Fiela: Making communities Safer: Northern Cape

The multidisciplinary operation by various state security entities to rid South Africa’s streets of crime and criminals and to ensure strict compliance with various laws and regulations governing the country continues nationwide. Operation Fiela, which means ‘sweep’ in Sesotho, aims at dealing with issues of criminality such as illegal weapons, drug dens, prostitution rings and other illegal activities.

As part of the operation, the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), other relevant Government departments and provincial and municipal law-enforcement agencies are working together in all provinces to ensure that peace and stability is maintained.

The two day nationwide Operation Fiela held on Thursday, 29 October 2015 and Friday 30 October 2015 has once attained positive results throughout the Province. SAPS members and other relevant government departments as well as Provincial and Municipal law enforcement agencies, Kimberley K9 unit, Kimberley Flying Squad, SAPS Vehicle Identification Section and Crime Intelligence formed part of this integrated operation.

The operations focused on illicit drugs, contraband/illegal goods and products, second hand dealers, hijacked and condemned buildings, unlicensed businesses, illegal firearms and ammunition and other related offences. There was a high police visibility in all stations areas. Road blocks and stop and search operations contributed to the success.

The following successes were achieved:

Galeshewe station:

During the early hours of Thursday, 29 October 2015, Galeshewe Detectives held an operation and went out to trace and arrest suspects wanted in their daily investigation of cases. Eighteen  suspects were arrested in cases ranging from assault with intention to course grievously body harm, pointing of a fire arm, housebreaking and theft, burglary business and malicious damage to property .All suspects arrested will appear in court soon.

Kuruman station:

7 suspects arrest for cases pertaining to the Road Traffic Act, Drunk in public, theft and assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm

Nababeep station:

16 arrests for drunk in public and driving motor vehicle without a licence

Hartswater station:

7 arrests for possession of dagga, gambling in public, selling liquor without a licence and drunk in public

The message to our communities is clear – Operation Fiela is a welcome initiative to ensure that the people in South Africa ARE and FEEL safe.
