Police on police officers in court for corruption

Two policeman appeared in court for corruption

Constable Sinothi Mahlaba (34), and Sergeant Bongumusa Mzobe (38), from Pinetown police station briefly appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Court on the 06 January 2020 following their arrest for corruption.

It is alleged that on 30 December 2019 the complainant and his friend were arrested by the two police officials after they were found in possession of counterfeit liquor. Policemen did not open a case but allegedly demanded cash from the complainant in order to destroy the evidence.

The complainant  allegedly paid R4000.00 and the remaining balance was due on Friday. They were then transported to Durban since their vehicle was held by the accused. The matter was reported to the Hawks members from Durban Serious Corruption Investigation.

On Friday, 3 January 2020 an undercover operation was conducted and the two were caught in the act collecting cash from the complainant. They were subsequently arrested and charged for corruption. The court has granted the pair R5000.00 bail each and the case was postponed to 20 February 2020.
