Weekly operations by Swartland, Overstrand and Mossel Bay K-9 and Rural Safety Units
The Mossel Bay, Overstrand and Swartland K-9 Units, in partnership with the Rural Safety Units (RSUs) in the Overstrand and Swartland areas, continues to make inroads in the fight against crime in their respective areas. Between 27 November and 2 December 2023, these units with various other municipal law enforcement agencies and the South African Police Service (SAPS), arrested twenty (20) individuals for various crimes. Of these, ten (10) were apprehended in the Overstrand municipal area, and ten (10) in the Swartland.
The Mossel Bay K-9 unit had various operations, which included a search at a youth correctional centre, where 8 bankies of dagga and half a mandrax tablet was discovered. This unit also assisted in the recovery of a stolen cellphone and sunglasses in JCC Camp, after a robbery occurred at Diaz beach.
The Swartland units had operations in Malmesbury, Moorreesburg and Riebeek-Wes, with suspect arrested for:
- x3 dealing in liquor,
- x6 possession of drugs and
- x1 possession of a dangerous weapon.
The units also confiscated:
- large quantities of alcohol,
- x3 mandrax tablets and
- x1 machete.
Amongst others the Overstand arrests included:
- x2 possession of drugs;
- x2 dealing in liquor and
- x1 wanted suspect.
This unit confiscated:
- x18 bankies of dagga,
- x8 dagga zolls and
- x1 bankie tik.
Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen said, “Our K9 and Rural Safety Units, are demonstrating that the more there is a visible law enforcement presence, there is a greater chance to effectively combat crime and remove illicit items from our communities.
These units are bringing our Western Cape Safety Plan (WCSP) to life, which amongst others seek to ensure that our residents can live free of fear, in safer environment and with dignity. As the Western Cape Government, we encourage our residents to join hands with us and continue to support these units, so that greater safety is achieved throughout the entire province.”
