The police in Limpopo have made their intentions of making the Easter weekend and other long weekends this April peaceful ones by arresting 540 suspects for various crimes ranging from property related, armed robbery and driving under the influence of liquor during the past weekend.
A total of 234 suspects were arrested for housebreaking at residence as well as business premises, stock theft, theft out of motor vehicle, theft of motor vehicle, as well as the attempt to commit housebreaking. A further 37 suspects were busted for the possession of suspected stolen property. Seventy six (76) people were nabbed for contact crimes which includes assaults, murder and attempted murder. A further 45 suspects were also arrested for being in the possession of dangerous weapons.
These arrests follow the implementation of the Dangerous Weapons Act (Act NO 15 of 2013) in January this year which stipulates that it is a criminal offence to possess a dangerous weapon during public gatherings and mass demonstrations with the intention of committing an unlawful act. During the arrests, police confiscated seven (7) illegal firearms, several dangerous weapons, including knives, axes and panga’s, whilst ten (10) people were arrested for reckless or negligent driving and driving under the influence of liquor.
The acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Maj Gen Berning Ntlemeza stressed that the police operations will intensify during the coming days and that members of the community are requested to cooperate with the police during this time to ensure a safe period for all.
