Operation "Fiela" in full swing in Cape Town CBD
A crime fighting approach popularly known as Operation “Fiela” started early this morning (Thursday 2015-07-30) in the Cape Town CBD area where different government departments, including the police, deployed in full strength to ensure that they rid the streets of Cape Town of any criminal activities and elements.
The assembly point of the operation was at the Cape Town Stadium where the role-players, which included the Cape Town Cluster police, Border Police, Public Order Police and the Firearm Liquor and Second Hand Goods component, gathered together with other law enforcement, Metro police, Traffic, Department of Community as well as SARS, Social Development, Immigration and Home Affairs members.
At about 09:30 the forces moved to the Station Deck, Grand Parade, Long Street and St George’s Mall, where they stopped and searched many community members in the streets of Cape Town. At the Station Deck they confiscated a bulk of counterfeit goods and they also took a number of undocumented immigrants who were found without legitimate refugee permits into custody.
During the operation 10 people were arrested for contravening the Immigration Act, one was arrested for the possession of drugs, three juveniles were arrested for the possession of dagga and a 47 year old suspect was arrested for possession of five bags of dagga with an estimated street value of R4000. Counterfeit goods were confiscated, which consisted of four large bags of counterfeit clothes (Addidas, Nike, etc) as well as one large bag of name branded peek caps and six large bags of counterfeit Nike and Addidas takkies. A large amount of rubber arm bands were confiscated by customs officials. These exhibits were all handed in at the Cape Town Central Police Station for safe keeping and further court proceedings.
The suspects were taken to Cape Town Central Police Station for further detention and shall appear in the Cape Town Magistrates Court once charged.
