Police Officer arrested for attempting to bribe KwaZulu-Natal head of the Hawks

A Durban senior police officer approached KwaZulu-Natal Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) General Johan Booysens. The Colonel offered Booysens R2 million for a sensitive document which is key to an on-going investigation by the Hawks.

Booysens notified his superiors at the national office as well as the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A covert operation was launched. An agreement was made for the suspect to handover R1.5 million. The balance was to be handed over later. The senior police officer dropped a suitcase containing an amount of money into the boot of Booysens's car, upon which he (Booysens) gave the document to the officer. The officer was arrested moments later. The sensitive document was found in his possession. The money in the suitcase amounted to R1 362 million when it was counted.

The suspect will appear in the Durban Magistrate Court today on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.
