Police nominated as a case study on Management Performance Assessment Tool

SAPS to be benchmarked in performance management

The decision by the Department of Planning Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) to nominate the South African Police Service (SAPS) to be used as a good practice case study based on its performance on the Management Performance Assessment Tool (MPAT) is a clear indication that SAPS is headed in a positive direction.

This was said by the National Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega, after receiving confirmation from the DPME. The case study will be done by Wits University.

"We started a long and difficult journey of turning the SAPS around from a governance, management and administrative performance perspective. This is because of the fervent belief that a well governed and managed organisation is bound to do better in achieving its goals. This is part of achieving the objectives of the National Development Plan of government being an efficient and effective public service.

General Phiyega would like to take this opportunity to thank every member of the South African Police Service for the sterling work done which resulted in the SAPS moving up from position 27 to 12 in 2013. SAPS and all other state departments are assessed in this regard. The 2014 results are not out yet but management is confident that the department will show improved performance.

The DPME conducted a moderation exercise on all 45 government departments to confirm the Management Performance Assessment Tool (MPAT) for which the SAPS demonstrated good practices on all four key performance areas viz. Leadership, Strategy, Integration and Capacity.

The National Commissioner feels it is prudent that every member of this organisation is made aware that his/her dedication, hard work and determination has not gone unnoticed. “We have made excellent progress and this would not have been achieved without the commitment of every one of our colleagues,” said the National Commissioner. “Continue persevering and soon we will reach the top," she added.
