National Police Commissioner, General Bheki Cele, has congratulated members involved on this morning's operation, which resulted in the arrest of two suspects in Moroka, Soweto.
Police have arrested a retired prosecutor (61 years-old) and a detective constable (36 years-old), on charges of racketeering, corruption, extortion, defeating the course of justice and conspiracy to commit perjury. This is part of the operation that took place on the 9th of September 2011. That day, police arrested five policemen, one senior prosecutor, two attorneys and four businessmen.
In simple terms, some of the suspects are alleged to have colluded in manipulating the justice system to benefit themselves and the businessmen. At the same time, people were arrested on trumped up charges. The arrests are a culmination of an investigation that started in December last year.
The two suspects (prosecutor and detective constable) are expected to appear in the Protea Magistrate Court today. The suspects that were arrested last month are currently out on bail under strict conditions.
