Hawks launch manhunt for cop killers

The Acting National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigation (Hawks) Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza has learnt with shock of yet another killing of a police Sergeant in Alice, Eastern Cape, on Saturday.

Sergeant Xola Sowambi (35) was found on Sunday in a farm in the Balfour area with a gunshot shot to his head.  He was allegedly hijacked of his vehicle, shot and killed before the suspects sped off in his vehicle.

It is alleged that Sowambi was en-route to report for duty on Saturday, 5 September, to start his morning shift but never reached his place of work. A search operation was launched immediately until his car was found in Whittlesea, 60 kilometers away when it was stopped by the local police and two (2) males were seen running away. Sowambi car was found on the R67 road between Fort Beaufort and Seymour.

Inside the car members seized a laptop which has since been linked to a hijacking of another hijacking in Hogsback last week Friday. The said vehicle was found smashed in Hogback and indications are that Sonwabi was killed for his car since the other one was no longer drivable.

“Hardly a day has passed commemorating our fallen heroes we mourning another death. This is not acceptable, I have assembled a team of high level detectives to probe this murder.  There will be no rest until we find who is responsible. My condolences to the family and I want to assure them that we will do everything in our power to arrest the suspects which will bring the family one step closer to closure,” said Ntlemeza.
