Police Committee welcomes suspension of Senior Officials

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police has welcomed the suspension of two senior police officers in Pretoria following their alleged involvement in corrupt activities.

Last week the Committee issued a statement calling for the suspension of officers working at the Central Firearm Registry (CFR) following allegations, made by a private firearm company, that senior officers are accepting bribes to issue firearm licences.

Newspapers had also alleged that senior officers working for the CFR were accepting bribes to issue gun licences.

The Committee has requested that the South African Police Services (SAPS) put measures in place to ensure that the issuing of firearm licences is not compromised and that only those citizens who meet the criteria to carry a firearm are issued with a licence. To this end, the Committee would like to see measures put in place to combat bribery in the issuing of licences. A plan of how this will be done must be presented to the Committee.

The Committee wants assurance from SAPS that no backlog will be experienced because of the bribery allegations and the suspension of the officers, and that the issuing of licences will proceed timeously.
