Police Committee slams Police brutality

The Portfolio Committee on Police condemns in the strongest terms the incident of a Daveyton taxi driver who was allegedly dragged to death by policemen earlier this week. The taxi driver was allegedly dragged behind a police vehicle and was later found dead in the holding cells at Daveyton police station in Benoni on Tuesday.

The Committee is shocked and dismayed that the police, who are meant to protect the public, can be capable of committing such acts. The police motto “to serve and protect” is clearly of no relevance to these police officers. SAPS must ensure that all its members live by the dictum. Communities cannot and will not trust the police as long as there are police officers who engage in such acts of criminality.

The Committee has asked the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to ensure that a thorough investigation is conducted into the incident and afforded the highest priority. While the investigation is underway, the Committee has asked the senior SAPS management to ensure that the policemen implicated in the incident are suspended with immediate effect.
