The Portfolio Committee on Police has strongly denounced the brutal slaying of two on-duty police officers and one off-duty officer in Cape Town yesterday.
Committee Chairperson Mr Francois Beukman expressed shock at the incidents. Mr Beukman called upon community members to work with the police to ensure that the perpetrators of these killings are brought to book soon.
“It is incomprehensible that our police officers should be put in a position of fearing for their lives instead of protecting and serving our communities. I call upon all the people of Nyanga where the two on-duty officers were murdered and those of Khayelitsha where the off-duty cop was also killed to work with the police. The community must also report other crimes taking place in their areas.”
What the Committee also found shocking was the fact that the two police officers murdered in Nyanga were attending to a suspected car hijacking incident when they were killed and their firearms taken from them.
These incidents, according to the Committee Chairperson, have no place in society and SAPS should move with speed in bringing the culprits to book.
The Committee also expressed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the three deceased police officers and to fellow men and women in blue.
