Police Committee condemns cop killings

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Police has commended the swift reaction taken by the police to arrest suspects following the killing of a Strand policeman in the Western Cape. This shows commitment in ensuring that those that keep taking the lives of policeman are brought to book. However, the Committee is concerned that, on the other hand there has been no arrest in the murder of Gauteng top cop Tirhani Maswanganyi. It has been two weeks since the Joburg cop’s body was found dumped outside Pretoria.

The Committee calls on anyone who might have information about the killing to bring it to the attention of the police. For the Committee it’s disheartening that those that are tasked with protecting the citizens of the country are being murdered by the same citizens they are meant to protect.

The Committee calls on the public to work with the police to ensure that any cop killers or those who threaten the lives of policemen are brought to book. As law makers, the Committee cannot allow a state of lawlessness where those who are responsible for keeping peace and stability in the country are butchered by criminals.

The Committee will also hold discussion on what preventative measures can be employed to ensure that the killing of police officers is combated and will also look at whether the solution to this killings is to impose harsher sentences against those found guilty of killing cops.
