The Portfolio Committee on Police has called for the immediate suspension (with no pay) of five police officers who have been charged raping women and girls.
According to the Chairperson of the Committee, Ms Annelize van Wyk, the suspension of these officers will send out a strong message to the other men (cops) in blue that they cannot abuse their positions for committing criminal activities.
The call by the Committee comes after media reports that five cops stand accused of raping women and girls. Three officers are from the Western Cape and two from Gauteng. The Committee finds it appalling that the same officers who are entrusted with ensuring the rule of law reigns supreme are now facing serious charges of raping women and children. Their behaviour brings the name of South African Police Service (SAPS) into disrepute.
The committee appeals to the public to report such acts of crime, especially crimes against women and children.
