The Association for Mine Workers and Construction Union (AMCU) has been granted permission by the Bojanala Municipality to gather at Rustenburg tomorrow, 16 August 2013 in order to commemorate the Marikana tragedy.
Therefore, the gathering will be legal. The organisers are expected to ensure that the provisions of the Gatherings Act are fully complied with. The South African Police Service (SAPS) will be present to ensure that the gathering is peaceful and orderly.
“We wish to appeal to everyone who will be in attendance to conduct themselves appropriately and to cooperate with the event organisers, marshals and the police. Most importantly, we plead with them to not carry dangerous weapons including knives, knobkerries, firearms or any other dangerous weapons,” said the SAPS National Commissioner General Riah Phiyega.
General Phiyega also added that the police will be there to ensure that the rights of every person present at the gathering are not infringed in any way.
The National Commissioner reiterated her call to all the leaders to make responsible statements which will not incite people and will not cause the already delicate situation to deteriorate.
