Gauteng MEC for Health and Social Development Ntombi Mekgwe has called on the police to investigate suspected sabotage at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital.
This follows three incidents in one week which disrupted services and place the lives of patients at risk. In first incident the laundry machine software was tampered with and removed causing the machines not to run. This affected the availability of clean linen in the hospital.
In the second incident gas lines were deliberately closed down causing gas banks to run empty. This affected wards and theaters and caused operations to be delayed.
Generators at maternity section were tampered with in the third incident after the availability of power during the electricity outage. This trick was also used during the general public sector strike last year.
The MEC said it totally unacceptable that people should disrupt hospital services and put the lives of patients at risk simply because they have a grievance.
“We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour and we will be asking the police to investigate this matter urgently. Whoever is responsible for this criminal behaviour must show no mercy. Platforms are available for the resolution of grievances but unethical conduct will be severely punished,” the MEC said.
