A Hawks task team has arrested a 34 year old suspect for the alleged murder of Sergeant Xolani Sowambi (35) from the Eastern Cape.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday in Queenstown and a unlicensed firearm was seized in the process.
Sergeant Sowambi was allegedly hijacked and killed whilst en-route to work last week Saturday, 5 September, to start his morning shift the following day.
His private vehicle was found in Whittlesea following an all-night search by the police. Two suspects were seen running away after being stopped by police.
The Acting Head of the DPCI Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza and the Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta have welcomed the swift arrest.
They have commended the breakthrough which will bring solace to the family of the late Sergeant Sowambi whilst investigations are still underway to haul in the remaining suspect. The 34 year old suspect is expected to appear on Thursday in Queenstown Magistrate Court.
