Names of people to serve in the Provincial Planning Commission of the Eastern Cape will be announced next week. This was revealed by Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kiviet during the Human Rights Day address to over three thousand people that gathered at the Port Alfred Hospital Hill grounds today - 21 March 2012.
Premier Kiviet said the commissioners will be comming from a variety of fields with vast knowledge and experiences to lead a long range plan and a vision that is shared by every citizen and institution of the Eastern Cape.
"This will not just be a government framework, but a societal development path against which every player must commit and work to realise," said Premier Kiviet. She said the celebration of human rights day is a fitting tribute to scores of people that laid down their lives for our freedom, covering the Sharpville, Bhisho, Langa and Gquza massacres.
She said as there were 38 days to go before South Africa celebrates eighteen years of freedom, it is important to start planning for accelerating the struggle for a better life for all, building on the achievements made to date.
Premier Kiviet said government has begun to intensify investments to improve the socio-economic conditions of the people of the Eastern Cape with over R125 billion committed to build ports, railways, roads, agriculture and energy infrastructure to position the Eastern Cape as a major player in the socio-economic landscape of South Africa.
The human rights celebrations held in the middle of quite a scenic coastal town of the Eastern Cape, attracted a colour spectrum of the people with young and old afforded an opportunity to remember the past that shaped South Africa of today.
Speaking to the predominantly young audience the premier said "we dare not fail our forefather, mothers and martyrs that propelled the growth of the tree of liberty with their blood". "We have demonstrated our ability to forgive perpetrators but can never afford the national amnesia on these issues, because that would threaten our future peace and freedom," said Premier Kiviet.
