One hundred and thirty seven taxi drivers across the North West province completed K53 theory and practical driving testing last week.
Twelve qualifying drivers proceed to the regional final phase of the Brandhouse Number One Taxi Driver competition to be held next month.
The testing phase of the initiative was conducted by Toyota Advanced Driving Academy. Toyota South Africa is a partner with Brandhouse and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in the Number One Taxi Driver campaign.
North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa, says that the aim of the Brandhouse Number One Taxi Driver campaign is to deliver responsible role models within the taxi industry who embody true values of responsible driving and great customer care.
According to MEC Yawa, the campaign seeks to educate taxi drivers and other road users on road safety and highlights in particular driver fatigue, disregard for traffic rules, driving and drinking, high speed driving and un-roadworthiness of vehicles.
He says that first phase of the campaign; the "Call to Action" was conducted through road shows, gazebo promotions and information dissemination at taxi ranks, shopping centres and tollgates in order to shortlist the competing drivers.
During these activities by Brandhouse and the RTMC with the support of provincial Department of Public Safety and North West Taxi Council, entry forms were distributed at taxi ranks across the province.
The driver with the highest score to represent the province at the national level will be announced on Friday, 29 October 2010 at Taung Tusk.
