A woman pedestrian died after she was knocked down by a car on the Majemantsho-Lotlhakane road outside Mahikeng in the North West province on Thursday evening.
The accident occurred at around 19h15 near Sundowns football ground. The 38 year old woman was allegedly knocked down by a Toyota Corolla that was driving from Setlopo village towards Majemantsho while trying to cross the road.
The woman's 17 year old niece who was walking home along with her alleged that her aunt who had spent the late afternoon drinking with friends at a near shebeen ignored her when she warned her about the oncoming car that hit her. The woman who was carrying grocery plastic bags that were strewn all over the accident scene is suspected to have sustained fatal head injuries as she landed on the tarred road.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Desbo Mohono in conveying condolences to the family of the pedestrian also appealed to pedestrians to wear bright reflective colours whenever they are walking at night.
In confirming that police are investigating a case of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving, MEC Mohono said that high levels of alcohol abuse result in drunk people walking on the roads and that 70% of adult pedestrians who are killed on public roads are drunk.
