A male pedestrian in his 20’s died after he was knocked down by a car on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway outside Brits in the North West province on Wednesday evening.
It is alleged that the pedestrian was hit by an Opel Monza sedan whilst crossing the N4 from Bapong to Majakaneng. The accident allegedly occurred at around 9:00 pm under the pedestrian overbridge linking the two villages situated on both sides of the highway.
The 40 year-old male driver who was driving alone from Marikana Lonmin mine towards Brits was in a state of shock to narrate what had happened as the passenger had partially gone through the windscreen to land on his dashboard. His other leg was severed.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
In conveying condolences to the family that lost their loved one in the road accident, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono appealed to pedestrians to wear reflective colours at night and cross public roads only when it is safe to do so.
MEC Mohono appealed to pedestrians crossing either from Bapong to Majakaneng and or vise-a-versa to use the pedestrian overbridge to avoid accidents and fatalities on the road.
