Partnership of civil society and business critical to address hunger - Premier Mahumapelo

The partnership of civil society and the business sector are critical in the roll out of job creation programmes, the War on Poverty and Comprehensive Rural Development Programme interventions aimed at addressing the triple challenges of poverty, inequality and unemployment, North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo said on World Hunger Day.

“Foodbanks that have been established as part of the War room on poverty campaign should serve as a social safety net that compliments our school nutrition scheme to ensure that those in dire need do not go to bed on empty stomachs,” Premier Mahumapelo highlighted.

Mahumapelo said that land reform, agrarian transformation and rural development will be accelerated to address poverty and unemployment estimated at 32.46% and affecting about 42.06% of young people who constitute the total unemployment population in the province.

According to Census 2011, the poverty level in the North West province is estimated at 37% with 19% of households falling within the expenditure of R600 and less per month. It is estimated that 60, 4% of children and 51% of youth live in conditions of poverty.
