An agreement between the Department of Cooperative Governance and law enforcement agencies such as the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation (“the Hawks”) and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has led to 745 allegations of corruption involving government officials and members of the public being investigated in municipalities throughout the country resulting 403 arrests.
This was announced by the Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Andries Nel, MP, in Parliament yesterday.
Deputy Minister Nel was responding to a question by Mr WF Faber (DA - Northern Cape) whether the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs would be requesting the Municipal Demarcation Board to table a report in Parliament giving reasons for its recommendation to merge Midvaal and Emfuleni Municipalities.
Nel indicated that flowing out of this agreement the law enforcement agencies, the “Hawks” in particular, have established provincial teams to focus specifically on allegations that are referred by the department.
The working relationship allows the department to play a coordination role in gathering information that provides leads and ensures that efforts by the law enforcement agencies are properly directed to hot-spot municipalities.
