Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation congratulates the Zambian National Football team (Chipolopolo) for winning the 2012 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday in Gabon.
The Committee also commends joint hosts of the tournament, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea for staging a world-class event. Mr Richard Mdakane, Chairperson of the Committee, said they have done exceptionally well to put the whole African continent on the world map.
Zambia lifted the AFCON trophy after beating tournament favourites Ivory Coast 8-7 on penalties following a 120 minutes playtime that failed to produce any goals.
The Committee said Zambia’s success should serve as an inspiration to Bafana Bafana, who won the tournament in 1996, but failed to impress in recent years.
Before the final, the players laid wreaths at the scene of the plane crash that killed 25 Zambian players in 1993; the team was travelling to Senegal for a World Cup qualifying match. This win by Chipolopolo was expected to ease the pain of the Zambian nation.
