Parliament’s Presiding Officers, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Ms Baleka Mbete, and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Ms Thandi Modise, and their deputies have learned with shock and serious concern about the shooting last night in Mpumalanga of Member of Parliament and Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Environmental Affairs, Mr Jackson Mthembu.
The incident has occurred at a particularly busy time in the programme of Parliament when Committees in both Houses are dealing with Budget Review and Recommendation Report processes and on the eve of the tabling in Parliament of the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement by the Minister of Finance.
Parliament wishes Mr Mthembu a speedy recovery and strength to his family.
We trust the law will take its course and that the perpetrators will be brought to justice as soon as possible.
