Committee welcomes South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) presentation
The Portfolio Committee on Communications has welcomed a presentation by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) on evaluation of its capacity and current state of affairs.
The Committee is impressed by the public broadcaster’s move from adverse to qualified audit opinion in 2013/14 financial year. Committee Chairperson, Ms Joyce Moloi-Moropa, reiterated that although much work still needed to be done, SABC’s performance indicated a move in the right direction.
At the same time, the Committee has resolved to schedule another meeting in due course with the SABC as well as the Minister of the Department of Communications, Ms Faith Mthambi, to deliberate on the application of the two legislations that govern the corporation. The legislations are: Broadcasting Act (Act No.4 of 1999) and Companies Act (Act No. 71 of 2008).
“I still need to consult with the legal section of Parliament regarding concurrences between the two legislations that govern SABC. Thereafter we need to meet again to discuss about this matter,” said Ms Moloi-Moropa.
