Parliament welcomes progress reports from Special Investigating Unit on Water and Sanitation

SCOPA welcomes SIU and National Treasury reports on Water and Sanitation Department

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) has welcomed the progress report of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on the Department of Water and Sanitation. Scopa was informed that the SIU has instituted civil litigations against the Vuwani Steel Pipeline contract, which amounted to R95 million, and another one against the Lepelle Northern Water contract, which amounted to R2,2 billion.

Scopa was also informed by the SIU that it has referred seven cases to the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) and 36 cases to the National Prosecuting Authority. The SIU has also referred 23 disciplinary cases where there was evidence of official misconduct to the department's accounting officer, 20 cases to the South African Revenue Services and three cases to the Construction Industry Development Board.

Scopa also welcomed National Treasurys presentation on the department and Water Trading Entity's budgeting and financial management.
