The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education welcomes permanent appointment of temporary teachers

The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education has welcomed the permanent appointment of temporary teachers and the transfer of serving teachers into schools where they are needed in the Eastern Cape.

Committee Chairperson, Ms Hope Malgas, hailed this as a major milestone for education in the province which will ensure basic education to all learners. Ms Malgas said the decision would bring stability for both educators and learners. The announcement was made today in East London by the Education Labour Relations Council.

There are 2 868 qualified and unqualified educators in the province, a situation which has at times led to instability in schools. The province has become synonymous with labour unrest, particularly relating to the issues of temporary educators and transfer of additional educators.

“All parties can now focus on the welfare of the child to ensure continuous education and improved results. This will lead to effective learning and teaching that in turn leads to quality education. This augurs well for effective learning and teaching,” said Ms Malgas.
