Parliament welcomes Parole Board ruling on Frikkie du Preez and Christoff Becker case

Correctional Services Committee welcomes Parole Board Ruling

The Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services welcomes the announcement that the parole board has revoked the parole of Mr Frikkie du Preez and Mr Christoff Becker. This decision will go a long way in reassuring South African public on the legitimacy of the parole system.

“The fact that the two gentlemen had banned substances highlight their unsuitability for parole and we view this decision as correct as it will send a clear message that any unlawful activity will not be accepted at our correctional facilities” said Chairperson of the Committee, Mr Vincent Smith.

Despite this, the Committee is still concerned that these banned substances find their way into correctional facilities with ease. “It is thus not enough that the parole of the two inmates was revoked, there is still a need for lasting solutions to ensure that our facilities are crime-free and serve their purpose of rehabilitating offenders,” Mr Smith emphasised.

The Committee also urges the Department of Correctional Services to speedily conclude the investigation into the role that their officials might have played in the whole matter. It is when that happens that every citizen will regain trust in the correctional services and their systems.

The Committee will continue to monitor the outcome of the investigation into the role of officials in the matter to ensure complete resolution of the matter.
