The Portfolio Committee on Communications has welcomed legal opinion by the Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Services Unit, which was about the removal of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board members.
Although it is not judgment to a particular situation, the legal opinion states that any removal of the SABC board member that is not effected in line with the provision of the Broadcasting Act is invalid and unlawful.
The Committee has therefore resolved to convene another meeting with the Minister of Communications, Ms Faith Mthambi, in which she will be provided an opportunity to respond to the legal opinion.
“Upon engagement with the Minister on this matter, we will then discuss way forward regarding its implications,” said Ms Joyce Moloi-Moropa, Committee Chairperson.
