Parliament welcomes appointment of the new Basic Education Director-General

Basic Education Portfolio Committee congratulates new DG

The Portfolio Committee on Basic Education today welcomed the appointment of a new Director-General (DG) in the Department of Basic Education.

Mr Mathanzima Mweli’s appointment, with immediate effect, was approved by cabinet this week and announced today. Until his appointment, Mr Mweli was the acting deputy director-general for curriculum, policy, support and monitoring in the Department of Basic Education

Committee Chairperson Ms Nomalungelo Gina congratulated Mr Mweli on his appointment. “The Committee haS had several interactions with Mr Mweli over the years. He has an outstanding work ethic and has always been very approachable and helpful.”

According to an earlier statement released by the Department, Mr Mweli comes to the position with a wealth of experience and an in-depth understanding of the needs and challenges in the sector. He has a number of qualifications, including a Bachelor of Arts in Education with Honours, a Bachelor of Administration in Industrial Relations with Honours, and a Master’s Degree in Development and Management, all from the University of the North West.

Ms Gina said the Committee looks forward to future interactions with Mr Mweli and is sure that he will keep the Department on a positive path, improving quality and efficiency in the sector. “We look forward to a continued good relationship that will grow stronger and enhance education in our country.”
 
The Committee would like to thank Mr Paddy Padayachee for all his efforts in acting in the position of DG for the past two years.
