The Portfolio Committee on Home Affairs welcomes the appointment of Mr Vuma Glenton Mashinini as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC). The appointment comes at an opportune time as the institution prepares for the upcoming local government elections.
The Committee is of the view that this appointment will strengthen the governance structures of the Commission and by extension strengthen South Africa’s hard fought democracy. The Committee remains convinced that Mr Mashinini’s wealth of experience within the IEC and other electoral bodies in the continent have empowered him to perform within this new position.
Furthermore, the Committee believes that Mr Mashinini will add value as the IEC continues to build on its legacy of running free and fair elections which have remained the foundation on which South Africa’s constitutional democracy is built.
The Committee wishes Mr Mashinini all of the best as he executes his duties within this important institution.
