Parliament on week ahead

Busy week ahead for Parliament

Tuesday’s Women’s Roundtable Discussion, a Motion by the Leader of the Opposition for the establishment of an Ad Hoc Committee to inquire into whether the President should be removed from the office in terms of section 89 (1) (a) of the Constitution, kicks off a busy week for Parliament.

On Wednesday the Deputy President will be answering questions in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) at three o’clock. As stipulated in the Constitution the Deputy President is required to answer questions from Members of Parliament once per quarter in the NCOP.

Section 92 (2) of the Constitution stipulates that Members of the Cabinet are accountable collectively and individually to Parliament for the exercise of the powers and the performance of their functions. The procedure for putting questions to the Executive is one of the ways in which Parliament holds the Executive accountable.

Expected also as a subject for discussion during the National Assembly Plenary on Tuesday is a Motion from Ms Lynnette Abrahams on the socio-economic impact of alcohol, drugs and substance abuse in our communities and on local development and the solutions thereto. At the same time the NCOP Plenary will have a debate on the killing of police officers in South Africa under the theme: “Waging a concerted fight against the killing of police officers in our country.”
