Parliament on visit to Brand South Africa

Committee discovers need for legislating Brand South Africa

The Portfolio Committee on Communications has on the second day of its oversight visit to Gauteng discovered that Brand South Africa (BSA), a state-owned entity under the Department of Communications, is in need of legislation that will define its core mandate. The Committee learned this during interaction with the board of trustees, management and staff members of BSA at its office in Houghton, Johannesburg. The Committee assured the entity of its support.

The Committee was impressed by the manner in which BSA is linking its work with most government departments, including the Department of International Relations and Cooperation and the Department of Trade and Industry.

During the meeting, BSA raised a number of challenges, including budgetary constraints and insufficient staff. Committee Chairperson Ms Joyce Moloi-Moropa reiterated that the Committee will not micro-manage the entity and, therefore, will escalate all issues to the Minister of Communications with whom it is mandated to execute oversight.

“I believe that the meeting was robust and fruitful, and as the Committee we are now in a better position to understand the work of the entity. Going forward, it will be easy to execute our oversight on the Minister,” Ms Moloi-Moropa said. The Committee’s interaction with BSA was part of its three-day oversight visit to Gauteng. It will wrap up its visit today at a meeting with the Minister, management and staff members of the Department of Communications.
