Parliament on violence on the roads

Transport Committee concerned with violence on the roads, calls on industry to engage

The Portfolio Committee on Transport is concerned with violent nature of the protests in the transport industry.

Committee Chairperson Mr Mosebenzi Zwane said it was unfortunate and that the protest action could impact negatively on the public transport industry and the South African economy.

“Transport is the backbone of our economy, safety on the roads ought to be guaranteed at all times. All stakeholders in the transport industry must to come together to resolve the crisis,” Mr Zwane said.

Several Trucks had been vandalised and set alight in the past two weeks in several provinces throughout the country.

Although it understands the concerns raised by truck drivers the committee condemns any form of disorder, violence and vandalism on the roads.
