Parliament on suspension of Police Commissioner

Police Committee welcomes suspension of National Police Commissioner

The Portfolio Committee on Police has welcomed today’s announcement by President Jacob Zuma to suspend National Police Commissioner, General Riah Phiyega.

Committee Chairperson, Mr Francois Beukman, believes this is a correct approach towards ensuring proper adherence to processes related to the inquiry President Zuma established to look into the fitness of General Riah Phiyega to hold office, among other things.

Mr Beukman says maintaining stability in the SAPS will be very critical during this time and as such believes a swift appointment of an Acting National Police Commissioner would assist in this regard.

The Committee further called on all SAPS members to give their full support to the person that will be appointed as Acting National Police Commissioner so that the work of fighting crime continues uninterrupted.

The Committee also called on all Deputy National Police Commissioners and Provincial Commissioners to support the person who will be appointed Acting National Commissioner and urged them to always abide by their Constitutional mandate of ensuring a safe and secure South Africa.

Committee Members also committed to working and supporting the person that will be appointed as Acting National Police Commissioner.
