Parliament on submission of Mr Lumko Mtide's qualifications

Communications Committee Sets Record Straight

The Portfolio Committee on Communications would like to put on record that the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) board nominee, Mr Lumko Mtimde, did submit to Parliament copies of qualifications listed on his curriculum vitae (CV), contrary to incorrect reports in the media that Mr Mtimde misrepresented his qualifications.

The media also wrongfully drew comparisons between him and the former SABC Chairperson, Ms Zandile Tshabalala, who resigned from the board after the Committee found her guilty of falsifying her qualifications.

Mr Mtimde was one of the 96 candidates nominated by the public to fill the SABC board vacancy. He was duly qualified as per informations on his CV, but his nominee could not send copies of his qualifications on time to meet the Committee’s deadline for submission of certificates’ qualifications.

Parliament is currently in possession of copies of his qualifications, which were sent after the shortlisting process had closed.

Committee Chairperson Ms Joyce Moloi-Moropa said that although the Committee strongly respects the freedom of the media to report on parliamentary work, it also views false reporting as having the potential to tarnish the credibility of the Committee and to compromise the integrity of parliamentary due process, as well as Mr Mtimde’s credibility and integrity.

“We are also worried that information from some of the nominees’ CVs landed in the media, although the information was meant to be confidential only to the members of the Sub-Committee of the Portfolio Committee on Communications,” Ms Moloi-Moropa said.
