The Portfolio Committee on Communications has today pledged its support to the Film and Publications Board (FPB) to streamline film classification criteria in order to create uniformity within the sector. This emerged during the Committee’s interaction with management and staff members of the FPB at their offices in Centurion, Pretoria. The Committee made a pledge after FPB raised concerns that South Africa is the only country in the world without uniform classification criteria of films and a lack of resources to monitor online child pornography.
Committee Chairperson, Ms Joyce Moloi-Moropa, said the work that is done by the entity is more than what the Committee has envisaged. “The FPB needs to collaborate with stakeholders in the film industry including educating the Members of Parliament so that they can spread the message to their constituencies in order to have a maximum impact with the limited resources available,” said Ms Moloi-Moropa. She further said the entity must streamline networks with other state-owned entities and government departments in order to educate the public about child pornography.
Meanwhile, the oversight will continue tomorrow at the Brand South Africa offices in Houghton, Johannesburg.
