Parliament shortlists 12 candidates for ICASA Council

The Portfolio Committee on Communications has shortlisted 12 candidates who will be interviewed to fill five vacant positions at the Independent Communication Authority of South Africa (ICASA) Council.

The shortlisted candidates are Mr Diratsagae Maoke, Mr Keabetswe Modimoeng, Mr Lance Rothschild, Mr Lumko Mtimde, Mr Paris Mashile, Mr Peter Hlapolosa, Mr Peter Zimri, Mr Sello Molefe, Mr Thamsanqa Ntenteni, Mr Yengwayo Kutta, Ms Botlenyana Mokhele and Ms Dimakatso Qocha.

Four vacancies became available after the term of office for Councillors William Currie and Joseph Lebooa as well as William Stucke and Ntombizodwa Ndhlovu expired at the end of September and October 2014. The fifth vacancy was created when Dr Marcia Socikwa resigned in January 2015.

Committee Chairperson, Ms Joyce Moloi-Moropa, expressed confidence in the shortlisted candidates, saying that they were suitable and reflected a balanced generation mix as well as racial diversity.

“The ICASA Council requires competent and qualified individuals who will be able to develop policies, regulate and govern the broadcasting and telecommunications sector in the public interest,” Ms Moloi-Moropa said.

A preliminary date for the interviews is 25 May 2015.
