Parliament joins the nation in mourning the death of former Member of Parliament and anti-apartheid stalwart Mendi Msimang
Parliament, Monday 3 December 2018 - Presiding Officers of Parliament, led by Speaker of the National Assembly (NA), Ms. Baleka Mbete, and Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Ms. Thandi Modise, wish to extend their heartfelt condolences to the family of former Member of Parliament and anti-apartheid stalwart, Mr. Mendi Msimang, who passed-on today after a long illness.
The late struggle stalwart went underground when the African National Congress (ANC) was banned in 1961. Mr. Msimang served as the ANC’s London representative during apartheid and he once acted as a Secretary to Mr. Walter Sisulu. When he came back from exile in 1991, he was elected into the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).
In 1994, Mr. Msimang was one of the pioneer Member of Parliament in the new democratic South Africa, and also served a chairperson of the ANC Caucus in Parliament. In 1999, Mr. Msimang was awarded the Order for Meritorious Service in Silver by President Nelson Mandela.
He was married to the former Minister of Health Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, who passed-on in 2009.
On behalf of the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa, Speaker Mbete and Chairperson Modise extend their condolences to the Msimang and Tshabalala families, relatives, his comrades and colleagues. They said the nation has lost one of its outstanding citizens and a champion of freedom and democracy.
