Parliament says school sport should be made compulsory

The Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation today met with the Department of Sport and Recreation and the Department of Basic Education to receive a briefing on progress made with the implementation of the school sport programme.

The Committee believes that the National Schools Act should ensure that school sport is made compulsory rather than optional in schools. The Committee also believes that an amendment to the National Schools Act is needed that will include consent for random drug testing of learners for use of performance enhancing products. The Committee wants the Department of Basic Education to fast track the process of reviewing the legislation to include this aspect.

The Committee commends efforts made by the Departments of Sport and Recreation and Basic Education to ensure that school sport becomes popular in schools despite funding challenges.
